The Adventures of Priscilla / Queen of the Desert in Helsinki City Theatre

 

Right of the bat, I have to admit that I haven't seen the original movie that the musical is based on. But when I heard about the musical in Helsinki City Theatre, I bought the ticket immediately they go on sale. I managed to get a good seat at the preview for myself as a Christmas present last year.  No it was finally time to enjoy the gift!

The theatre is the largest professional theater in Finland.  

The theater is located in a very beautiful location on the shore of Eläintarhanlahti (Zoo's bay), with good transport links. The building was designed by architect Timo Penttilä. The building was completed 55 years ago, but I think it's still stylish.


But no back to the musical!


The production is done big and well. Samuel Harjanne, a number one musical director in Finland is responssible for directing. A good job has been done with the casting. Starring Lauri Mikkola, ClarissaJäärni and Niki Rautén as drag queens traveling through the Australian wildernes. Clarissa Jäärni, who plays Bernadette Basinger, is trans woman, so she is able to bring her life exprerience to the role. The rest of the performers are also solid professionals, and the drag characters are not treated with the same cheap humor or tragedy as before, but they are treated with respect, which pleased me especially in the execution.

One thing that I especially admire in Samuel Harjanne's directions, is his unique ability to use small things to create a human and touching touch to the stories. So even though the show was full of glitter and seguins spiced party and disco up from start to finish, there were also tears of emotion in the audience.  At the end, the performance also received a standing ovation from the audience, which is not very common for a rigid Finnish audience.


I am really happy that such a high level of musical is being made in Finland.
The singing, dancing, choreography and choreography worked in such a way that the performance could just as well have been watched in London or New York. In addition, it's wonderful that in these dark times you can get away from everyday life and enjoy a great musical. This experience brings joy for a long time to come!

Helsinki Pride park party 2022

  The first live park party after pandemia felt like a true party of love! Castle of the President of Finland President's spouse Jenni Haukio was protector of Pride 2022   The weather was 👌👌👌 Sunny and warm, just the way I like it! Colourfull foodtrucks       The star tower was open to the revelers   '   This year Helsinki pride park event had 70 000- 80 000 participants. Views from Kaivopuisto to the sea The rainbow families had also organized a lot of programs for the children.  For example, the water games looked so refreshing in the heat that they could have been available for adults as well!   The seagull also participated in the festive fun   I think the party was very successful and well organized.  The only thing I missed was the live music performances.

(Drag)King Bingo!

    My first drag king bingo! I have allways wanted to participate to drag and for my suprise it was a drag king bingo. I like the idea that rainbow people are doing the tradiotional things but much more funnier than majority. Drag artist's were Kristiina Puukko aka Tom of Puukko and Minna Kivelä aka Klude. They manged to crate hilarious and boisterous atmosphere, the interaction with the audience was amazing!                                           The coupon cost 5 euros. I didn't win anything but it was also my own fault.                                         The audience was also rewarded for false shouts and participation.                           ...
